Do you need a telehandler ticket in BC?
There is no government-issued telehandler licence in BC. Instead, the employer must make sure every operator is trained, evaluated and competent on the machine they use. That takes two parts: classroom education, which this course provides, and hands-on, site-specific training and evaluation, which your employer completes with the checklist included here.
What is covered
Telehandler operator training: 9 modules
Every module is built on the BC OHS Regulation and WorkSafeBC guidance, with section references throughout so you know exactly where each rule comes from. Modules 2 to 8 end with a short knowledge check, and the course ends with a 25-question final assessment.
MODULE 1Why it matters and the law
The four ways telehandlers hurt people, who is responsible for what, what makes an operator competent in BC, and your rights to know, participate and refuse unsafe work. Built on the Workers Compensation Act and OHS Regulation Parts 3, 16 and 19.
MODULE 2Know your machine
Anatomy, fixed and rotating types, controls, attachments, ROPS and FOPS protection, seatbelt requirements (s.16.5) and the load moment indicator.
MODULE 3Stability and load charts
The stability triangle, load moment, how reach and attachments cut capacity, how to read a load chart, a worked example, and the warning signs that you are running out of margin.
MODULE 4Pre-operational inspection
The every-shift inspection required by s.16.3: a full walkaround, cab and function tests, and the call between stop, report and monitor when you find a defect.
MODULE 5Safe operation
Mounting, travelling with a load, slopes, blind spots and spotters (s.16.6), picking up and placing loads at height, rotating telehandlers and outriggers, loading and securing, transport, and parking (s.16.9).
MODULE 6Site hazards and emergencies
Overhead power line clearances under Part 19, ground conditions, wind and weather, site traffic and pedestrians, what to do in a tip-over or line contact, and when to report to WorkSafeBC.
MODULE 7Special lifts: hooks and work platforms
Hook lifts and where the rules are unclear, Part 15 rigging, sling angles, and the strict requirements for lifting people in a work platform.
MODULE 8People, judgment and real cases
Fitness for work (ss.4.19 and 4.20), distraction and hurry, three case studies built from common incident patterns, and the five questions to ask before every lift.
MODULE 9Putting it all together
Site-specific training and the practical evaluation your employer completes, ten operator rules to remember, and your final assessment.

What this course is, and what it is not
This online course delivers the classroom (education) portion of telehandler training. WorkSafeBC expects hands-on, site-specific training and a practical evaluation on the actual machine, completed by a competent person, usually your employer. We include a practical evaluation checklist to make that simple. Completing the course alone does not make someone competent to operate a telehandler.
How it works
Self-paced. Finish in one sitting or spread it over a week.
1
Enrol and start immediately — all 9 modules open as soon as your enrolment is confirmed. Works on any device.

FAQ
Telehandler training questions, answered
Do I need a telehandler ticket or licence in BC?
WorkSafeBC does not issue a telehandler operator licence or ticket. Instead, the employer must make sure every operator is trained, evaluated and competent on the machine they use. That training has two parts: classroom education, which this online course provides, and hands-on, site-specific training and evaluation on the actual machine, which the employer completes. A practical evaluation checklist is included with the course.
Is this telehandler course approved by WorkSafeBC?
WorkSafeBC does not approve or accredit individual online courses. This course is built on the BC OHS Regulation (including Part 16 on mobile equipment and Part 19 on electrical safety) and on the lift truck training standards that WorkSafeBC’s guidelines reference, such as CSA B335. It supports your employer’s training obligations, but it does not replace the practical, site-specific evaluation.
How long does the telehandler training take?
Most people finish in about two hours. That is roughly 55 minutes of instruction plus eight short knowledge checks and a 25-question final assessment. It is fully self-paced, so you can stop and resume whenever you like.
Does this course include the hands-on practical evaluation?
No. An online course cannot assess your skills on a real machine. The employer, or a competent person they appoint, completes the hands-on evaluation on your actual telehandler and attachments. The course includes a practical evaluation checklist that covers the inspection, travel, load handling, power line awareness and emergency knowledge the evaluator should observe.
How long is the certificate valid, and when is a refresher needed?
Your certificate of completion records that you passed the course. WorkSafeBC’s lift truck training guidance expects refresher training or re-evaluation at least every three years, and sooner after an incident or when unsafe practices are observed, so plan on a refresher at that point.
Does it cover Class 7 telehandlers, rotating telehandlers, hook lifts and work platforms?
Yes. The course is written for telescopic handlers (rough-terrain variable reach trucks, commonly called Class VII under CSA B335). It covers fixed-boom machines, an overview of rotating telehandlers and outriggers, hook lifts and Part 15 rigging basics, and the rules for lifting people in an approved work platform.
Is this course valid outside BC?
The operating fundamentals, including stability, load charts, inspection, travel and load handling, apply on any site. The legal references, however, are to the BC OHS Regulation and WorkSafeBC. If you work in another province, check your provincial requirements and your employer’s training program.
Can I buy this for my whole crew?
Yes. For groups of four or more, email support@mysafetyprep.com with the number of people. We reply within one business day with group pricing and set everyone up with immediate course access.
Can I take the telehandler course on my phone?
Yes. The course works on desktop, tablet and mobile devices and is available 24 hours a day, so crews can complete it on their own time.
