How often is respirator fit testing required under WorkSafeBC?
WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation Section 8.40 requires respirator fit testing before a worker first uses a respirator and annually thereafter. The federal Canada Labour Code requires fit testing every two years for workers in federally regulated workplaces. Annual fit testing is the standard for most BC workplaces governed by WorkSafeBC.
Does the worker need to be clean-shaven for a respirator fit test?
Yes — CSA Standard Z94.4, which governs respirator fit testing in Canada, requires that workers be clean-shaven in all areas where the respirator facepiece seals to the face. Workers who arrive with facial hair in the seal area cannot be fit tested on that day and must reschedule after shaving.
