Is a hazmat survey required for your project?

Required for all pre-1990 buildings in the Lower Mainland.

Any building or structure built before 1990 requires a pre-demolition hazardous materials survey before renovation or demolition work begins. This applies to homeowners, contractors, developers, and property managers across the Lower Mainland.

Residential Demolition — Vancouver and Lower Mainland

Any home built before 1990 requires a hazmat survey before your demolition permit will be issued. Vancouver Specials, post-war bungalows, and older homes across Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, and Richmond typically contain asbestos in stipple ceilings, drywall compound, floor tiles, and pipe insulation.

Renovation Permits — Pre-1990 Buildings

WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation Section 20.112 applies to renovation as well as full demolition. Major renovations disturbing walls, ceilings, or floors in pre-1990 buildings require a QP hazmat assessment before a renovation permit will be issued.

Commercial and Institutional Demolition

Commercial buildings, schools, care homes, hospitals, and institutional facilities require a full designated substance survey before demolition or major renovation. A CRSP or CSP must sign the QP declaration.
