Understanding psychological health & safety
What is psychological health and safety in the workplace?
Psychological health and safety is about preventing harm to workers’ mental health and creating workplace conditions that support psychological well-being. Just as employers manage physical hazards, psychological hazards — often called psychosocial hazards — should be identified, assessed, and addressed as part of an effective workplace health and safety program.
This course is built around CSA Z1003, the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, so it’s grounded in a recognized framework rather than generic wellness advice. It covers the full range of psychosocial hazards, including:
Workload & Balance
Work demands, pace, hours, and recovery time.
Leadership & Support
Management practices, communication, and support.
Respect & Relationships
Civility, respect, conflict, and workplace behaviour.
Role Clarity & Job Fit
Clear expectations, responsibilities, and appropriate work.
Safety & Protection
Protection from psychological and physical harm.
Organizational Culture
The conditions and practices that shape the workplace.
BC workplace safety
What does WorkSafeBC say about psychological health and safety?
WorkSafeBC states that employers are responsible for ensuring a physically and psychologically healthy and safe workplace — including establishing an occupational health and safety program, training employees, providing appropriate supervision, and addressing problems workers report.
Their guidance recommends communicating safety information, training managers and workers on control measures, giving workers a way to report psychosocial hazards, and monitoring those controls over time. This course walks through what that looks like in practice.
What’s included
Everything a defensible program requires, in one course
A psychological health and safety program needs to cover four things: training that’s ongoing rather than one-time, relevant to your actual workplace, developed with input from your safety committee, and documented. This course addresses all four directly.

Workplace mental health claims in BC are already rising fast
Psychological injury claims accepted by WorkSafeBC more than doubled between 2018 and 2022, and it’s gotten easier for workers to bring these claims forward. WorkSafeBC already checks for basic psychological health and safety programs during inspections, and employers already carry due diligence obligations to address known psychological hazards — the same as any physical hazard. This isn’t about a future rule; it’s about what WorkSafeBC and the courts already expect today.

FAQ
Common questions
Is this actually required for my business?
Under BC’s existing Workers Compensation Act and OHS Regulation, employers already have due diligence obligations to identify and address workplace hazards — psychological hazards included. WorkSafeBC is also finalizing new rules that would make psychosocial hazard training an explicit requirement. Either way, this course covers what a reasonable, defensible training program looks like right now.
Will this take my team offline for a whole day?
No. The course runs about 3.5 hours in total, including the final exam. It’s built to be complete — covering the full range of workplace psychosocial hazards and the full identification, assessment, and control process — without requiring a full day away from work, since every employee needs to take it, not just one role.
Is this generic training, or specific to us?
Both. The core course covers what every BC workplace needs to know, and the included supplement is where your team adds your actual site details — so what you end up with is training that reflects your real workplace.
Do we need our safety committee involved?
Yes, and we’ve made that easy — this course comes with a ready-made document you can hand straight to your JHSC or safety representative for their review and sign-off.
Do we have to do this every year?
Training on this is meant to be ongoing rather than a one-time thing. We offer a shorter, lower-cost refresher course you can purchase whenever you’re ready to renew — it’s a separate course, not an automatic renewal, so you’re in control of timing.
What proof do we get that this happened?
Every employee gets an instant certificate on completion, and you keep the signed JHSC consultation document — together, that’s your record if anyone ever asks.
