⚠ WorkSafeBC enforces confined space requirements with some of the toughest penalties in Canada
Under OHS Regulation Part 9, employers must ensure every worker who may enter a confined space is properly instructed in its hazards and the precautions and procedures required to control them before entry. The Metro Vancouver Regional District was fined $637,415 for confined space violations, and individual penalties can exceed $100,000. A short awareness overview can introduce the topic — this confined space certification course covers the complete program an employer or supervisor needs to actually run one.
One certificate, three roles
Entrant, Standby Person, and Qualified Person — one certificate covers all three
Most confined space providers sell role-specific courses and issue certificates limited to a single role — an entrant certificate that doesn’t cover standby duty, for example. On a real job site, roles rotate: the person standing by today is often the entrant tomorrow, and someone needs to be qualified to assess hazards and issue permits. This course certifies all three roles from one enrolment per worker.
Entrant
The worker who enters the space — hazard recognition, permit conditions, atmospheric testing, ventilation, PPE and respiratory protection, and when to evacuate.
Standby Person
The person outside the space — continuous communication, monitoring, controlling access, non-entry rescue, and initiating emergency response. Also known on-site as an attendant, monitor, or hole watch.
Qualified Person
Hazard assessment, issuing and closing out entry permits, and overseeing entries under OHS Reg 9.9 to 9.11.

MODULE 3Hazard Recognition

The hazard assessment process and who qualifies to perform it, atmospheric hazards including oxygen deficiency and enrichment, flammable and toxic gases, and BC’s low, moderate, and high hazard atmosphere classification system. Covers OHS Reg 9.9–9.11 — hazard assessment, procedures, qualifications.
MODULE 4Atmospheric Testing and Monitoring

Frequently asked questions about confined space training BC
Is this an awareness course?
No. This is a full entry-level course. Most confined space training available in BC is a 1.5 to 3 hour awareness overview. This course runs 8 hours and covers hazard assessment, atmospheric testing, isolation, permits, ventilation, standby, and rescue in depth.
Does this course meet WorkSafeBC requirements?
Yes. The course is built directly on Part 9 of the BC OHS Regulation and covers every topic in that Part, from the legal definition of a confined space through rescue and PPE requirements.
Does WorkSafeBC need to approve the training provider?
No. BC does not operate an approved-provider registry for confined space training. The OHS Regulation sets out what workers and supervisors must know and be able to do — it does not restrict which provider delivers that training. This course covers the full content required under Part 9.
Does confined space certification expire in BC?
The OHS Regulation does not set a fixed expiry date for confined space training. Many employers choose to refresh training periodically as part of their own program. Check your employer’s specific policy.
How long does the course take and how is it delivered?
